Ferguson Trenching Company was awarded the Annapolis Dual Brand Hotel project by Waynesboro Construction. The project required the expertise of all Civil Division crews for site grading, utility installations, concrete work, retaining walls, a dog park, and modifications to Taylor Avenue. Although familiar with such tasks, challenges arose due to site constraints and overhead electrical lines from the nearby BGE Cedar Park Substation. To proceed, medium voltage lines had to be relocated underground, delaying the start of the hotel construction.
Despite prior underground work, multiple overhead lines still posed daily safety risks. Adhering to Maryland High Voltage Line Act and OSHA regulations, FTC implemented additional safety measures including standdowns, overhead warning stickers, marked utility poles, and weekly toolbox talks. No incidents occurred during the project, which required 20,851 man-hours to complete.
A critical task was installing two 39,500-pound Filterra storm drain structures under 34kV lines. Collaborating with fellow ABC Member, a 200-ton crane lifted the structures horizontally. Coordinating with BGE and the City of Annapolis, an outage allowed safe installation by March 10, 2023. The project’s complexity required precise coordination, ensuring timely completion. Overcoming challenges through ingenuity and teamwork, the Annapolis Dual Brand Hotel project was a success.
We are thrilled to share that this project won an Excellence Award at the 2024 ABC Chesapeake Shores Excellence in Construction Awards banquet!
